1. Google Docs

Google Docs is a free, cloud-based competitor to Microsoft Word.
Make a Google account if you don’t already have one through Gmail. Here’s our video on how to do that: https://youtu.be/zfoxB8sGuZ0?t=200. Then head to docs.google.com and start using it. It works a lot like Microsoft Word.
Why is Google Docs important? It’s free, and has built-in spelling and grammar tools to help youout. You won’t have to worry about saving, it auto-saves every few seconds and backs-up to Google Drive. Plus, a colleague or editor can enter the document with you from another device, making collaboration easy.
2. Libre Office

Libre Office is a free, open-source competitor for Microsoft Word.
Head to the website and download the program. It works much like Microsoft Word.
Why is Libre Office important? It’s free, simple enough for a quick memo, but powerful enough to create complete books. It is offline, so you’ll need to save to your computer.
3. Grammarly

Grammarly is a free, or premium if you purchase, grammar-checker, spell-checker, style-checker and plagiarism checker. Also available as an add-on for Firefox or Chrome to check your grammer in the browser, or as a plugin for Microsoft Word.
Head to the website and create a login. Then you’ll be able to write directly in a new Grammarly document, or you can cut and paste text into Grammarly,
or use an add-on for Firefox or Chrome to check your grammar in a Google Doc or other place using your browser. There’s also a plugin available for Microsoft Word.
Why is Grammarly important? It provides details about each of its choices for your grammar, spelling and style to help you understand. You can also customize it to help Grammarly understand your style better.
4. Typosaurus

Typosaurus is a free spell-checker made for checking entire websites or single web pages. Also available as an extension for Google Chrome.
Head to the website, no log-in needed. Just type in the URL of the website you want to check the spelling of, and it’ll give you the results. Otherwise, use the Chrome extension to check specific pages.
Why is Typosaurus great? It’s a good way to perform a final check on a website after it’s launched, or after a blog is posted. The Chrome extension will show you the physical location of mispelled words on your website which you may have previously missed, and makes suggestions. The webpage will show you which words were misspelled and provide suggestions.
5. Thesaurus.com

Thesaurus.com is an online thesaurus tool to improve your writing.
Head to the website and type in the word you’re trying to find a synonym or antonym for.
Why is Thesaurus.com important? Sometimes you’re just stuck on a word and can’t think of a new one. If you don’t typically have a thesaurus in your office, this is a quick way to take care of the problem.
6. WordHTML

WordHTML is a free way to convert a Google Doc, Libre Office doc, or Microsoft Word doc with headers, bolding, italics, and other styling into a HTML format for use in a blog or on a website.
Head to wordhtml.com, and paste in your stylized text. Then click the HTML tab, and you’ll have your clean HTML to paste into your website.
Why is WordHTML important? This can save you a lot of time if you’ve already stylized your text in a word processor, so you don’t have to do it again on WordPress or another CMS.
