How To Choose A Great Domain Name For Your Website
You may or may not have a name picked out for your company. But you sure as heck better have your business plan lined up! If so, you at least have a rough idea of what might sound good in your industry for a domain name, and what your competitors have. That’s super important, great job!
You’ll need to consider a few things today for your domain:
- Do you want domain and hosting all handled by the same company?
- Is the name of your business available as a .com?
- Follow the rules of great domain names.
1. Do You Want Domain & Hosting Handled By The Same Company
FIRST – should you have your domain and hosting handled by the same company?
9 times out of 10 – heck yeah.
It’s way easier to remember 1 set of passwords than a bunch of different ones. If you choose a reputable company, you can have them send you reminders to renew your hosting and domain package when they’re close to expiring, making renewal easy and ensuring you don’t lose your domain or website.
2. Is The Name Of Your Business Available As A .com?
SECOND – is the name of your business available as a .com?
If my business name is Pete’s Pants and I sell large pocket pants to women (an underserved market, I must tell you), I might want to invest directly in petespants.com for brand recognition. And buying multiple domains is never out of the question, so you can redirect them all to one website. Getting an exact match to your brand name with a .com is the most sensible approach to getting a domain.
3. Follow The Rules Of Great Domain Names
THIRD – Follow the rules of great domain names.
If petespants.com isn’t available, I might be tempted to buy ppants.com instead. But that’s a double-letter, and it’s best to stay way from double letters.
Maybe I’ll try petes-pants.com, but hyphens are also something to stay away from.
Both of those options are harder for people to type out, and are harder to communicate when speaking or in a commercial.
You may be tempted to try womensbigpocketpants.com, but that can box you into one variety of clothing if Pete eventually wants to expand the brand. It also is quite long, making it hard to type out or speak in some cases.
You’ll also need to ensure any domain name you choose is actually available like we did in step two, using a registrar like domain.com.
Good luck out there!
